Dominion Meets Record Winter Peak Demand For Electricity From Customers
RICHMOND, Va. – Dominion (NYSE: D), one of the nation’s
largest energy producers, Tuesday met a record winter peak demand for electricity
from its 2.3 million customers while cold arctic air blasted the region.
Dominion
supplied 18,079 megawatts of electricity between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday.
That is an increase of more than 1,000 megawatts over the previous winter peak
demand record of 16,939 megawatts, which was set between the same hours on
Jan. 24, 2005. The all-time peak demand record is a summertime
mark of 19,375 megawatts set Aug. 3, 2006. One megawatt supplies enough
electricity at peak for 250 homes.
Tuesday’s cold weather and high usage
contributed to about 16,000 outages in the company’s Virginia and northeastern
North Carolina retail franchise service area. Dominion has restored power
to all of those customers.
Dominion is one of the nation's largest producers of energy, with a portfolio
of about 28,000 megawatts of generation, about 6.5 trillion cubic feet equivalent
of proved natural gas reserves and 7,800 miles of natural gas transmission pipeline.
Dominion also operates the nation's largest underground natural gas storage system
with about 960 billion cubic feet of storage capacity and serves retail energy
customers in eleven states. For more information about Dominion, visit
