RICHMOND – Dominion will nearly double
its annual support for the Fan Care program this year from $27,500 to $50,000.
"With the summer heat upon us and many seniors
in need, we hope this extra money will help our elderly neighbors stay more
comfortable," said Eva S. Hardy, senior vice president-External Affairs
& Corporate Communications.
Dominion and the Virginia Department for the
Aging started Fan Care 15 years ago to provide cooling relief for elderly customers.
The program provides free fans to elderly customers who meet eligibility requirements.
The Department for the Aging administers Fan Care while most of Dominion’s
donation goes toward the purchase of fans.
For the 11th year, Wal-Mart is a Fan Care partner,
serving as the statewide retailer providing fans to local Area Agencies on Aging
at a discounted rate. Other partners include Appalachian Power, the Harrisonburg
Electric Commission and the Accomac & Northhampton Electric Cooperative.
Local Area Agencies on Aging screen applicants
and distribute fans. To be eligible for Fan Care, an individual must:
Live in Virginia.
Be age 60 or older.
Have a need for cooling assistance.
Meet income guidelines defined by the Area Agencies on
Aging.
Those who are eligible can receive one fan per
cooling season. The program will continue until Sept. 30, or as long as funds
last. Dominion invites other utilities, electric cooperatives, municipalities
and businesses to contribute as Fan Care partners. Businesses can contact their
local Area Agency on Aging for more information.
