Dominion Virginia Power Offers Educational Grants To Schools, Educational Organizations
RICHMOND, Va. -- Dominion continues its partnership
with schools and educational organizations for the 2004-05 academic year by
making $200,000 available in grants for math and science projects.
The funds will be awarded to schools in Dominion's
retail electric and natural gas service areas in North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
Virginia and West Virginia. The program provides grants
of up to $5,000 to help schools and teachers strengthen the math and science
skills of students in grades K-12.
Applications are available on line at Dominion's
Internet Web site at www.dom.com,
keyword "grants." The application deadline is 5 p.m. May 3
and grant requests must be submitted electronically.
"The engineers of tomorrow will be those
students who have math and science skills. Through the education grants, Dominion
strives to foster an interest by students to excel in those areas," said
Jay L. Johnson, president and chief executive officer, Dominion Virginia Power.
"The proposals selected to receive the grants challenge students, make
learning fun and demonstrate the wonders of math and science and their practical
applications."
Dominion has awarded a total of $825,000 since
the program began in 1996. For example, Colonial Heights Middle School was awarded
$3,500 to allow students to become forensic scientists in order to solve a 'crime.'
The mystery began with a ransom note about a dog-napping. Students hypothesized,
investigated and collected data, and drew conclusions from simulated crime scenes.
Activities included DNA testing, foot print analysis, fingerprint matching,
blood typing and fiber analysis.
Dominion has a diversified and integrated energy
portfolio consisting of about 24,000 megawatts of generation. Dominion also
serves about 5 million natural gas and electric customers in nine states. For
