Virginia Power Opens 'Project Current Choice' Website
RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Power has established a website for
its proposed retail access pilot program, Project Current ChoiceSM.
The website contains detailed information about the program for consumers and
potential energy service providers.
"We want this to be a working website, one that educates
at the same time it helps customers and energy service providers conduct business,"
said Robert E. Rigbsy, Virginia Power president and chief operating officer.
"We believe the website will evolve into a very useful tool as the pilot
progresses."
Virginia Power and the staff of the State Corporation Commission
reached an agreement on the key elements of the retail pilot program in September.
If the commission approves the terms of agreement, Project Current Choice would
be one of the largest electric retail access pilot programs in the nation. More
than 70,000 Virginians representing approximately 400 megawatts of load would
have an opportunity to shop for competitive suppliers. Energy delivery to customers
in the pilot program is expected to begin in mid-2000.
Project Current Choice is the first step of a multi-year
effort to implement electric choice for 1.9 million customers served by Virginia
Power. Under the Virginia Electric Utility Restructuring Act of 1999, Virginia
consumers would begin to have a choice of energy service providers starting
on Jan. 1, 2002.
Currently, the website contains an overview of Virginia's
restructuring law and of the pilot program with information on its proposed
size and scope. It also contains frequently asked questions and glossaries for
consumers and energy service providers. In the future, eligible Virginia Power
customers will be able to use the website to volunteer for Project Current Choice.
Virginia Power is a subsidiary of Dominion
Resources Inc. (NYSE: D), an energy company with headquarters in Richmond.
