Virginia Power To Award $75,000 In Educational Grants

RICHMOND, Va. – For the fourth consecutive year, Virginia Power is offering $75,000 in grants to help improve Virginia students' math and science skills.

The grant program, called "The Virginia Power Partnership," makes awards for projects to be conducted during the 1999-2000 school year. Grant applications have been mailed to all public and private school principals and previous applicants.

"Educational grants provided by Virginia Power in 1998 enabled students across Virginia to study weather predictions, design and maintain an ecological center, establish a water monitoring program and create an after-school math program," said Eva Teig, senior vice president-External Affairs & Corporate Communications.

"The Virginia Power Partnership has been successful in fostering innovative learning methods for students and parents. We're pleased to again offer this successful program," Teig said.

Grants up to $5,000 will be awarded. All schools within the state are invited to apply, with preference given to projects in the geographic areas served by Virginia Power.

Virginia Power invites proposals in four categories:

  1. Mini-Grants – Projects to enhance the teaching of math and science, costing up to $500.
  2. Parental Involvement – Projects to increase the role of parents in math and science achievement.
  3. Closing the Gap – Projects to help schools with standardized test scores in math and science averaging below the 50th percentile.
  4. Environmental Education – Projects to develop math and science skills through the study of the environment.

Virginia Power will conduct a series of workshops in March to help prospective candidates prepare applications. The workshops will be held three times each day at locations in Farmville, Norfolk, Charlottesville, Woodbridge and Chester. Workshop location information can be obtained by calling the Virginia Power Classroom Connection Line at (800) 730-7217.

The deadline for grant applications is April 30. Grant awards will be announced July 1 and funds will be distributed in early August.

Virginia Power is the principal subsidiary of Dominion Resources Inc. (NYSE: D), an international energy business with headquarters in Richmond.
